November 10, 1930 — December 27, 2021

Charles Herbert Owens, Jr., 91, Shawnee, KS passed away Monday, Dec. 27, 2021 at the Olathe Hospice House, Olathe, KS. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2021; followed by burial with full military honors at the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to either VFW 10552, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church or Old Shawnee Town Historical Society.

Charles (Chuck) was born Nov. 10, 1930 to Charles and Helen (Drew) Owens. He was a graduate of Paseo High School and at-tended William Jewell College and Iowa State University. He enlisted in the army and graduated from Officers Candiate School in 1953. He spent the next twenty years in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, living in Germany, Thailand, Korea, Okinawa and several states in the US. He retired in 1972 as a Lt. Colonel and moved his family back to the Kansas City area, settling in Shawnee, Kansas.. He worked for the next thirty years in the medical device mail order business.

Chuck loved cars and trucks, especially Mustangs, and was an avid car racing fan, becoming one of the first season ticket holders at the Kansas Speedway. He was a scoutmaster and audiobook lover. He was a founding member of the Old Shawnee Town Historical Society, serving as treasurer and being honored with the Pioneer of the Year award. He helped to found the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as post commander. Many years he could be seen outside the Shawnee HyVee giving out poppies for Veteran’s day and helping hang the American flags at the Shawnee Veteran’s Memorial.

He was married for 68 years to his wife Judith (Koch) Owens. They were married in Wiesbaden, Germany on January 14, 1954. In their retirement years they enjoyed traveling with friends to places like China, Russia, India, Greece and Germany. Favorite activities included line dancing and card playing.

The couple has 3 children: Brick (JoAnne), Jenny Lane (James), Scott (Sondra); 4 grandchildren: Chip (Rachel), Jillian, Stuart, Ryan (Kris); and 2 ½ great grandchildren: Emory, Charlie and future baby Owens.

His grandchildren have fond memories of Grandpa teaching them to drive, taking them to construction sites to watch the heavy equipment at work, and going for donuts in the morning (don’t tell Grandmother!). Chuck was always ready to help when his children decided to build or renovate their homes or move state to state. He was invaluable when it came to getting the grandkids to school or taking care of them on sick days. He was present at every graduation and other milestone.

Chuck was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Schmidt.
