Dennis E. Sackett

September 27, 1932 — May 16, 2023

Dennis E. Sackett, 90, of Overland Park, was called home Tuesday May 16. He was born September 27, 1932, in Kansas City to Russell and Berniece Sackett.

Upon God’s welcome, he was rejoiced by the love of his life, Joan, and all his loved ones who had gone before him.

Dennis, early in his life,  began his career at Cargill Grain Company, where he met the love of his life, Joan. They fell in love and were married. Shortly after they were married, he entered the service, enlisting in the Army. Dad served his basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, where mom and his parents visited often. During his time in the Army, he was promoted to Sergeant and was tasked to teach the young soldiers winter combat thru skiing. After his service he was honorably discharged.

Dad began his civilian life working as a linesman at Southwestern Bell. He climbed poles, pulled wires, and installed phone systems for major businesses and individual homes. Through the years he enjoyed time with the family, and we traveled to Colorado every summer for vacation. It was always fun and memorable, and we did survive even without A/C in the station wagon in the hot summer.

He loved beer cans, and when Mark and Mike were young they all started collecting beer cans and his collection grew into a wonderful hobby for dad. Traveling to beer can shows, buying, selling, and trading. At one point his collection was worth over $40,000. Matt also got into the collection hobby and enjoyed taking dad to shows several times. Slowly over the most recent years he sold most of his collection and kept only a few favorite ones.

The best joys of his life were his grandkids. He and mom never missed a chance to babysit, take them out, go on vacation or just spend time with them. He loved every single one of them and they brightened his life. The birth of their great-granddaughter was a huge blessing for mom and him, and he lit up every time he got to see her and spend time with her.

Dennis is survived by his 3 sons; Mark Sackett, Mike Sackett, and Matt Sackett (Amy) and his daughter Mary (Joe); 5 grandchildren, Megan Vallejos (Cristian), Cory Reffett, Kelsey Reffett, Rachel Sackett, Erin Sackett; and his great-granddaughter Sawyer Sackett.

Dennis was the type of man everyone loved!! His personality was fun, quick-witted and gentle. No matter where he went, he would always brighten the room.

Dad is no longer with us, however the things he taught us on how to live and love will impact us forever!!

And we are all better individuals for it.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 19th, 2023 from 6 to 8 pm at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, KS. A funeral service will begin at 11am at Advent Lutheran Church in Olathe, KS.
