Patty L. Banister passed away peacefully with her son, Jeff, by her side on Nov. 3, 2023.
Patty was born April 24, 1934, in Shelbyville, IN. She graduated from Shelbyville High School and was proud to be a Golden Bear. As a young girl she enjoyed roller skating and raising banty hens. Along with her mother and father she grew up with four brothers and one sister. Patty was the last surviving member of her family.
She married Ray Banister in 1959 and they were united for 52 years until Ray’s passing in 2011. She lived the life of a supportive military family wife and lived in California and Japan before settling in Overland Park, KS. Just last month she celebrated living in the house she and Ray bought for 55 years. She was a member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic since 1967. She was the mother to Jeff Banister and Denise Hendsbee.
Denise preceded her mother in death in 2019 but left the gift of a granddaughter, Rachel Hendsbee, who was in town from her home in the U.K. the week before Patty entered the hospital. Her other granddaughter, Lauren Banister, enjoyed a special relationship with her grandmother and visited often from her home on the west coast. Patty was also preceded in death of another granddaughter, Caitlin.
Patty was fiercely independent and insistent on living by herself. She was a proud and successful homemaker who always put her family before herself. For those who knew her she is now happily in a place without leaves on the lawn, squirrels in the trees, moss on the trees, and no limbs in the yard. Maybe that’s why she kept cutting down her trees. Rest well, Mom.
A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Thursday, November 9th at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Overland Park, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30. A reception will follow the mass in the Church Hall.
