Joe Berry of Shawnee, KS passed away at home on Tuesday, April 28th at the age of 84. He was surrounded by his large and loving family his whole life, and enjoyed visiting with them and his many friends right to the end.
Joe was born in Texas, lived in the Missouri Ozarks during childhood, and attended high school at Shawnee Mission (North) where he met his future wife of 65 years, Dorothy Ellis. Joe and Dorothy raised six children, Dottie, Don, Dru, David, Dale, and Dawn. Dottie, David, and two great grandchildren preceded him in death. Joe and Dorothy have 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. He has two surviving brothers, John Berry of Tonganoxie, KS and Joe Berry of Hamilton, MO.
Joe was a carpenter, cabinetmaker, stock car driver, and racing enthusiast, even enjoying watching his grandson drive at Lakeside Speedway the last two weekends before his death. He and Dorothy were avid travelers, visiting Canada, Mexico, and all 50 states, 49 in their motor homes.
Joe was a creative thinker and craftsman, always looking for ways to change and improve nearly every structure and machine he came across. If there was a way to make it faster, stronger, better, or sometimes just different, he would find it!
Visitation will be Sunday, May 3rd 2:00-3:00 pm, followed at 3:00 pm by the funeral at the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS.
The family suggests memorials in Joe’s name to go to Compassionate Care Hospice
