Agnes Marie Weigel, of Salina Kansas passed away peacefully on Friday January 3, 2020 at St. Luke's Hospice House.
Aggie, as she was known by family and friends was born August 17, 1935 on the family farm in Gove County, Kansas to Philip and Susanna (Ochs) Zerr. She was the oldest of four siblings, Phil (Joan) Zerr of Fort Worth, Texas, Patricia (Joe) Evans of Rossville, Georgia, and two sisters that died at birth.
Aggie attended Jumbo Grade School and Gove High School in rural Gove County. While in high school she was active in sports, playing softball, volleyball, basketball, and was a cheerleader. During her summers she worked in a local café and for the County Register of Deeds office. She graduated high school in 1952 at the age of 16 and was too young to be accepted at Fort Hays College, so she worked at Wurst's Pharmacy Grocery and Locker Plant in Grainfield, Kansas. In 1953 she was accepted into St. Anthony's School of Nursing in Hays, Kansas and then graduated in 1956 with her Diploma of Nursing. While she was in nursing school, she met her husband, Leroy Weigel of 53 years. They were united in marriage on December 29th, 1956 at St. Agnes Church in Grainfield, Kansas. In 1967 Aggie and Leroy moved to Salina, Kansas which became home to the Weigel family for 47 years. Aggie worked as a registered nurse at St. John's Hospital in Salina; working the Pediatric, OB, and ED units. She also worked as the nursing house supervisor. In 1995 St. John's Hospital and Asbury Hospital in Salina merged at which time she became the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department. Aggie continued her career in that position until 1998 at which time she retired. During her time as nurse manager in the ED and in her retirement, Aggie taught paramedic students at the Junior Colleges of Hutchinson and Barton County paramedic programs. Aggie also taught CPR, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course, EMT, and ACLS. She also served on the board of the Emergency Nursing Association, which she was the founding member of the Kansas Chapter.
In January of 2014, Aggie moved to Shawnee Kansas to be closer to her family. She resided at Shawnee Hills Independent living, until recently moving to Silvercrest at College View. Aggie was an avid Kansas City Royals, Chiefs, KU Basketball and K State Football fan. Her hobbies included bowling, quilting, sewing, and playing Bingo.
Aggie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her son David (Jean) Weigel and three grandchildren, Brandon, Eric, Megan (Matt) Johnson, two great grandchildren Weston, and Ava all of Knoxville Tennessee; son, Ronald (Jaylene) Weigel Shawnee, Kansas and two grandchildren Colleen of Clarksville, Tennessee and Matthew of Manhattan Kansas; daughter LeAnn (Todd) Williams and two grandchildren Kylie of Overland Park, Kansas and Jacob of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also surviving are her two siblings Philip Zerr of Fort Worth, Texas and Patricia (Zerr) Evans of Rossville, Georgia.
The Rosary will be said Friday, January 10, 2020 6 p.m. at Amos Funeral Home, Shawnee, Kansas with visitation to follow till 8 p.m. The funeral mass is to be celebrated Saturday January 11th at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Shawnee Kansas at 10 AM. Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Shawnee, Kansas.
