Ainslie T. Settles, 87, of Overland Park, KS, passed away peacefully on March 29th.
A.T., the son of Fred and Dimple Settles was 4th generation Kansan, born in 1927 at the home of his grandparents in Douglas Co. He grew up loving animals and sports, lettering in football, basketball and track at Baldwin High School. His college years were interrupted, when on his 18th birthday, he received his draft notice. His enlistment in the US Navy found him serving as a Fireman 1st class aboard the USS Callao. Soon after his graduation from KU with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he met his wife Maryellen. Their loving union lasted for 46 years, ending with her death in July, 2000. At his 50th high school class reunion, A.T. lists his interests as "Traveling, Gardening, K.U. Sports, the K.C. Chiefs and Royals, Grandkids, their schooling and athletics, and the stock market." A.T. retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District in 1988 with 29 years of Civil Service. He will be remembered as the intelligent, quiet, witty, and loving gentleman that he was. In addition to Maryellen, A.T. was preceded in death by son Lawrence and Grandson Micah. He is survived by his children Martin Settles and Charlotte Harper; grandchildren Barbara Settles, Alicia Harper, Rachel Harper (Josh), and Audrey Harper; and great-grandsons Kennedy and Jarrett.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., Friday at the Church of Christ, 203 10th St., Baldwin City, KS with burial in the Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City. Visitation will be 6 - 8 p.m., Thursday at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee.
