Tom was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Mildred and John Shanks on June 10, 1930. Tom, along with his two brothers John and Bill lived in Chicago for years and later moved to Nevada, Missouri. Tom was quite the athlete in high school. He excelled in football, track, and of course the pool hall. He always had a love for animals. Growing up Tom had a pet raccoon named Jake, Joe the rooster and several dogs through out his life, not to mention a parrot named Rudy. Tom joined the Marine Corp. in 1951 and served as a Sergeant in the Korean War. Tom loved to fish, hunt, and spend time with his family. He would never turn down a pepperoni pizza or a fine cigar.
Tom was the most loving and caring father, grandfather, brother and friend anyone could ask for. He will be missed by many.
He is preceded in death by his mother, father, brother and wife of 30 years, Mary Zuniga Shanks. He is survived by his brother Bill Shanks; daughter Lori Welty, and son Scott Shanks; many brother and sister in-laws; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a great-grandson; and his beloved bulldog Cora.
