February 10, 1931 — August 8, 2021

Alfred Samuel (Sam) Hawkey, Jr. met his Savior on August 8, 2021 while residing at Village Shalom nursing home. Sam was the eldest son born in Newton, Kansas on February 10, 1931 to Dr. Alfred S. and Dorothea (Rodert) Hawkey. He spent the first ten years of his life in Newton. In 1941 he moved with his mother and two younger brothers to Kansas City, Kansas. He graduated from Rosedale High School in 1949. He attended Bethel College and then Baker University until he was drafted by the army and spent a year and a half in Germany.

Once he completed his service he finished his Bachelors degree in Chemistry from the University of Kansas. He began working as a research assistant/chemist in the laboratory at Menorah Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. He met the love of his life, Diana Ford and married her in June of 1959. Sam and Diana raised their two daughters, Margaret (Peggy) and Barbara beginning in Kansas City, MO and eventually in Fairway, KS. Sam enjoyed classical music, museums and photography. He was life long learner, reading and curious as to how things worked. He enjoyed traveling on back roads, a good steak, Kansas City barbecue and an entertaining movie. He was a quiet, private man who expressed his love in actions, in little and big ways that will long be remembered.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother William (Bill) C. Hawkey. He is survived by his brother Walter D. Hawkey, daughters Margaret (Peggy) Dean (Tom), Barbara Soukup (Andrew), three grandchildren he was immensely proud of, Joshua Dean (Meredith Pavicic) Matt Dean (Nicole Renna) and Jenna Soukup and a great grandchild bearing his name, John (Jack) Samuel Dean.
