Alfred Maxwell Meyers, lovingly known as Papa, of Shawnee, Kansas, went to be with our Lord on October 12, 2008 at the age of 100. Born on September 2, 1908, to Alfred Moyer and Carrie Ellen Meyers, at the family farmhouse in Merriam, Kansas where he was raised with his three brothers who preceded him in death.
He was quite the athlete, playing basketball, football, track and golf at Shawnee Mission Rural High School. He continued his love of sports at Kansas State University, where he excelled in football as the team's center.
Following graduation, he met and married his wife Leada Grace May. Together they shared 65 years and two children, Mitzi Dee Pflumm and Jerry Ray Meyers, before her death in 1996. Jerry Ray preceded him in death in 2003. He enjoyed and doted on his large family, consisting of 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and 4 step grandchildren and their families.
He proudly spent the majority of his career as an engineer with the Kansas City Structural Steel Company, where he designed a bridge over Canyon Diablo in Arizona and the headframe in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada. He was an active member of the Shawnee United Methodist Church, Shawnee Historical Society and Cosmopolitan Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, was a master in his woodshop, and loved tending and sharing his roses with family and friends.
Recently, over 130 family members and friends, from California to New York, gathered to celebrate Papa's 100th birthday at his family church. He will be greatly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shawnee United Methodist Church.
