Anthony “Tony” S. Haas, 78, died peacefully at Kansas City Hospice House on Thursday, September 30, 2021 after a year-long battle with leukemia. Despite the year’s challenges, Tony and his wife Donna viewed that time as a precious gift.
Tony was born on January 28, 1943 in Neosho, Missouri. The youngest of eight children born to Harvey Roosevelt Haas and Fannie Ellen Reynolds, he graduated from Neosho High School where he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. Tony dedicated thirty-seven years of his life in loyal service to AT&T (formerly Western Electric) where he served in purchasing and several other capacities. While at AT&T he also managed to squeeze in college classes and dip into real estate. After retirement, Tony enjoyed a ten-year second career as a rural mail carrier.
Tony was blessed with two children, Sheila and Steven, from his first marriage to Shirley (Thompson) Meek. He loved spending time with his family and telling stories of his childhood in Neosho. Passionate about baseball (he dreamed of playing it professionally), Tony especially loved watching his grandson and granddaughter play his favorite sport. He was an avid fisherman, President of the Jaycees, keen researcher, Consumer Reports devotee, and ardent Chiefs and Royals fan. Tony and his dog Charlie shared a sweet, special relationship and they enjoyed long walks together greeting their many friends in the neighborhood.
Tony will be remembered for his quiet and gentle manner and his kind and humble spirit. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Tony is survived by his best friend and partner of twenty-five years, Donna (Dodds) Haas of Lenexa, Kansas, daughter Sheila (Haas) Laurin and her son Curtis of Minneapolis, MN, son Steven Haas, his wife Krista, and their children Kody, Blake, and Sydney of Port Byron, IL, stepson Eric Henry of Shawnee, KS, stepdaughter Shannon (Henry) Gilliland, her husband Mike, and their children Michael and McKenna of Dallas, TX, stepdaughter Erin (Henry) Vincent, her husband Tony, their daughter and son-in-law Logan and Aaron Holt, and their son Joe of Wichita, KS, sister Wanda (Haas) Wilgus and sister Glenna (Haas) Brockman of Clinton, MO, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be announced a later date. The family suggests sending memorial contributions to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
