Arthur “Art” Penner

April 9, 1924 — March 13, 2021

Arthur "Art" Penner, 96, of Kansas City, MO, formerly of Shawnee, KS, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2021 at Riverstone Retirement Center, after a short illness.

Raised in rural area of Helena, Oklahoma, Art graduated from Helena High in 1943.  He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen on January 25th 1945.  During World War II, Art served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.  He received the Combat Infantryman Badge and one Gold Star.

Art worked in all phases of commercial building. He formed the "Art Penner Construction Company" in 1978.  His company constructed numerous buildings for over 25 years before Art retired at the age of 70.  In retirement, Art enjoyed spending the winter months in Tucson, AZ and the summers at the Lake of the Ozarks.  He also liked traveling, playing tennis and antique cars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred D. Penner and Susie (Unruh) Penner; his wife of 74 years, Mary Ellen Penner; a son David Penner; three brothers, George Penner, Alvin Penner and Edward Penner.  He is survived by his children, Ronnie Penner and wife Donna; Cynthia Penner and husband Byron Fox; and Rebecca Moeller and husband Chris; three sisters, Jenny DeHaas; Dora Lundak; Helma Unruh; eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Graveside Services

Art will be laid to rest in a private family graveside service at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.  The services will be streamed at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 2021.  Please see the link below to view the graveside service; The streaming will start 10 minutes before service time.
