Barney Ray Smith, Jr., 79, of Osawatomie, formerly of Shawnee, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016 at his home.
Barney was born December 5, 1936 to the late Barney R. Smith, Sr and Mattie Pearl Fulgham in Starkville, Mississippi. Barney served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Midway from 1956-1960. On October 23, 1958, Barney married Rosemary Dice, in Ottawa, KS. While living in Shawnee, Barney owned and operated London Pride Cleaners. He was able to grow the business to include over 15 locations in the Johnson County area. Barney was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Shawnee Chamber of Commerce as well as American Legion Post 327. Barney is preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Smith and a dear cousin, Jimmy Blankenship.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Rosemary; four children, Barney "Skip" R. Smith, III and wife Sarah; Johnny W. Smith; Mark G. Smith and wife Melanie; Loretta L. Glenn and husband Vance; six grandchildren, Eric C. Glenn and fiancé Jessica Lanzrath; Rose-Mari L. Glenn; Brittney A. Smith; Carley B. Smith; Jon-Michael Smith; Hayden L. Smith; and step-grandson, Ryan Vogelsberg.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 at the Amos Family Funeral Home, where a rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Barney will be laid to rest in Resurrection Mausoleum in Lenexa, Kansas.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude's Childrens Research Hosital, 501 St. Jude Place; Memphis, TN 38105.
