Betty Jane Andreas

February 9, 1933 — April 28, 2021

Betty Jane Nickel Andreas passed away peacefully on April 28, 2021 surrounded by her children.

Betty was born on February 9, 1933 to Rudolf and Lillian Nickel in Hillsboro, Kansas. She had an older sister Mary and was later joined by younger sisters Elsie and Sharon and younger brother Henry. She grew up on a farm in the Bruderthal Mennonite community near Hillsboro, Kansas, and helped her father on the farm using horse-drawn implements before the farm was mechanized.

Betty married Edward Andreas on October 17, 1952 in the Bruderthal Mennonite Church. She accompanied her husband while he completed the 1-W alternative service program for conscientious objectors at hospitals in Pennsylvania and Kansas from 1952 to 1954. After that, they lived on a farm near Beatrice, Nebraska for nine years; then moved to Kansas City, Kansas for two years; and then to their final home in Overland Park, Kansas where Betty lived for 55 years.

She became a member of the Church of God in 1965. Betty was an industrious homemaker, sewing many of the family’s clothes and raising two large gardens to help feed the family. She also enjoyed growing many vibrant flowers, paint-by-number, sewing, quilting, crafts, and embroidering pictures to decorate the home. She also enjoyed providing decorations for church services, such as plant arrangements and meaningful displays with themes such as grain harvests and preparing bread.

After her husband retired, they took many enjoyable car road trips across the United States and Canada, visiting their children and grandchildren along the way. During their trips she added to her collection of antiques decorating the house and property, which hearkened to her childhood growing up on a farm, working with animals, and raising crops. She had a lifelong fondness for horses, and several of her antiques and decorations share a theme of farming with horses.

Together Betty and Edward had five children. Betty is survived by son Michael of Olathe, KS, daughter Christine (Rex) Jamerson of Merriam, KS, daughter Rebecca (former spouse John) Wise of East Bend, NC, son Mark of Overland Park, KS, and son Steven of Carrollton, TX. Betty had four grandsons and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
