Betty Louise (Hisey) Calcara

October 31, 1930 — December 17, 2023

Shawnee, Kansas

Betty Louise Calcara, 93, passed away on December 17, 2023, in Shawnee, Kansas with her son Mickey and family friend Monsignor Michael Mullen by her side.

She was born on October 31, 1930, in Independence, Missouri, to the late Etta Hisey and Fay Hisey. Betty was a graduate of Northeast High School in Kansas City, Missouri, class of 1947.

Betty had a successful professional career spanning 33 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, followed by 5 years at Shawnee State Bank. She concluded her professional career with 16 years of service as Church Secretary to St. Joseph Catholic Church.  During that time, Betty shared her life with her cherished husband, Mike, for 40 years.

Betty was a faithful and devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee, Kansas. She was an active member of the St. Joseph Ladies Guild.  Betty was a talent in the kitchen, and was known for her delicious recipe for spaghetti and meatballs, which she lovingly prepared for her family and anyone who joined her for Sunday dinner. On special occasions that meal was followed up with her signature rum cake–a show stopper indeed.  She was also an avid fan of Walt Disney and took pride in sharing that her Uncle Clarence Nash was the original voice of Donald Duck.  She was a dedicated KC Royals baseball fan and rarely missed a game on TV.    In her free time, Betty enjoyed being the editor of the St. Joseph News and Views newsletter.  Betty had a passion for writing and was highly respected for her work.

Betty is survived by her son, Michael (Kathy) Calcara, stepsons Robin (Barbara) Calcara and Jamie (ReNee) Calcara, granddaughters Emily and Kat, sister Joanne Frobish, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty is preceded in death by her loving husband, Michael L Calcara, her mother Etta, father Fay, sister Mary Gregg, brother Richard Hisey, brother Robert Hisey, brother William Hisey, and step-son Tim (Marilyn) Calcara.
