Betty Ann Shidler

December 15, 1933 — June 11, 2021

Betty Ann (Petty) Shidler passed away on Friday, June 11, 2021, at the age of 87. She was the daughter of William Conway Petty and Sarah Louise Kopp. Betty grew up with her parents, a sister, Esther, and a brother Bill.

Betty was a loving mother and grandmother and leaves behind 6 children, Karen Edison (Terry), Kathy Ellis (Mark), Christine Sanchez (Steve), Carol Colboch (Doug), John Shidler (Teresa) and Constance Shidler (David Langston). Betty had 16 grandchildren, Timothy Garmoe, David Garmoe, Billy Garmoe, Robert Garmoe, Cody Garmoe, Joshua Garmoe, Zachary Garmoe, Michelle Juergens, Jennifer Juergens, Stephanie Gable, Melissa Chipman, Christopher Sanchez, Patrick Sanchez, Sarah Elizabeth Sanchez, Laura Esry, and Lindsey Van Trump. She had 21 great grandchildren.

Betty loved God and lived by the Optimist Creed. She always did her best to maintain a positive attitude and tried to think about the good things. Love, according to Betty, was seeking the other person’s highest good.

Betty worked for State Farm Insurance and the United States Postal Service in technical support roles and as an office manager and executive secretary to several other organizations. She also ran her own book selling business. Perhaps her most cherished role was when she acted as a Kindergarten Teacher at Muncie Christian School. She loved children and children loved her.

Betty constantly pondered how to overcome obstacles and was a very curious person. She often wrote letters to the editor and government officials to weigh in on the issues of the day and to help solve problems. Her children could always expect a call after the call to get one more idea that might help.

In her spare time, Betty studied text books, watched science videos and game shows and played the piano. A child of the Depression Era, Betty was a conservationist, leaving behind a lot of jelly jars, butter tubs, and pie tins.

Betty’s grandchildren will remember her giant hugs and warm grandma lap. She was beloved and will be missed.

Betty would want her friends and family to grieve as little as possible and then get on with a happy life, spreading the good news of her Christian faith and carrying out her optimistic world view.

A visitation will take place on Saturday, June 26th from 9:30-10:30 at Amos Family Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will follow thereafter also at Amos Family Funeral Home.
