Shawnee

Bruce Allen Miller (71) of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away in his home on July 28, 2023, surrounded by his family.  Born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas, Bruce graduated from Washington High School in 1969. After graduation, Bruce worked for his father’s truck line for many years and later drove a school bus for USD 500. He attended Kansas City Kansas Community College where he obtained his Associate's Degree, briefly attended Wichita State University, and eventually returned to school at Johnson County Community College to attend the police academy.

He started his law enforcement career with the Bonner Springs Police Department in 1990.  In 1994, he moved to the Shawnee Police Department where he moved up the ranks to become Sergeant.  In 2010, he retired after 20 years of service.  After retirement, he spent his time volunteering with the Shawnee PD, Meals on Wheels, and the Great Plains SPCA where he walked, trained, and played with as many dogs as possible.

Bruce loved life and always kept busy. He enjoyed gardening, camping, boating, fishing, antiquing, cooking/baking/grilling, spending time with his grandchildren, taking trips on his Gold Wing motorcycle, and walking the neighborhood with his dog, Egypt. Many of these activities were often enjoyed with friends by his side.  When he wasn’t busy with one of these activities, he could be found tinkering in his garage, oftentimes building something that would be useful for one of his hobbies.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Vera Miller, and his brother, Robert Miller. Survivors include his wonderful wife of over 50 years, Linda Miller of Shawnee, KS, brother Michael (Mary) Miller of Colorado Springs, CO,  sister,  Kathryn (Ron) Adney of Overland Park, KS,  Sister-in-law Peggy Miller of Kansas City, KS,  daughters Kelly (Chad) Milam of Eagle, CO, Amanda Zager of Shawnee, KS,  Lori (Freddy) Chavez of Shawnee, KS  and his grandchildren Reese Hernandez, Dominic and Dylan Milam, Riley and Ryder Zager, Avery and Rico Chavez. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and close friends that are considered to be family.

If you knew Bruce, you know he never met a stranger.  He could carry on a conversation with anyone about nearly any topic.  He was always willing to help whether to offer advice, help fix something, or quiz the grandkids on multiplication facts.  He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend.  He will be dearly missed by all.

The family invites you to join them for a Celebration of Life on August 4th, 2023 at the Olde Mill Property (611 West 2nd Street in Bonner Springs) from 5pm - 7pm.  Snacks will be provided - peanuts, pretzels, popcorn, & peanut M&M’s - just a few of Bruce’s favorite things!
