One of eight children, Burl was the fifth child and fourth son, of Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Allen and Mary âEffie' Francis on October 16, 1915, in Bellaire, Kansas. He passed away at his daughter's home in Shawnee, Kansas, on January 24, 2013, at the age of 97.
Burl met Vera Leona Jantzen while attending school in Lebanon, Kansas, where they both grew up. They were united in marriage on January 25, 1936, in Alma, Nebraska. Both were school teachers in Smith County before moving to Wichita, Kansas.
Shortly after his daughter's birth, the US Army called Burl to serve in WWII. He trained in Maryland and later served overseas in England and France. After Burl returned he purchased a truck and became an independent trucker. He bought and sold commodities.
Most of Burl and Vera’s 62 years together were spent in Wichita where church was very important to them both. Burl was an ordained Elder in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ Church) in which he served various roles of pastor, counselor, and district president.
He enjoyed gardening, especially tomatoes, and helping friends and neighbors.
His survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Judith A. and Michael J. Waldron, "grandson", Nathan A. Pyle all of Shawnee, Kansas; son, Kyle B. Allen of Wichita, Kansas; three sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Burl was a very special person and will be sorely missed by all.
