Carl Phillip Berg, 76, died August 7, 2012, at the University of Kansas Hospital, his family by his side.
Phil was born December 1, 1935, in Emporia, Kansas, to Carl and Marie Berg. He graduated with a teaching degree from Emporia State University and taught mathematics at Wellsville High School and Shawnee Mission East High School. His teaching career and love of students and education spanned nearly 50 years. Phil will be remembered as an amazing educator, tennis coach, friend and mentor.
His accomplishments and awards were many: In 1987 he was inducted into the Kansas State High School’s Activities Association Hall of Fame and in 1988 he was an inaugural inductee into the Kansas Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame.
Phil is survived by Glenda, his wife of 55 years; children Cindy and David; and grandchildren: Edward and Tiffany Tully, Mary and Patrick Greco, Kayla Berg, Sophie Tully, and Kaden Berg.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 11, 2012, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Prairie Village, Kansas.
An open celebratory gathering will be held Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 5:00 p.m., at 6131 Ensley Lane, Mission Hills, Kansas. All admirers, friends and loved ones of Phil are invited and encouraged to attend and share memories of this remarkable man.
