Carmen Mott, 85, of Shawnee, Kansas passed away January 19, 2022. She was born the fourth of nine children on January 31, 1936, in Kansas City, Kansas to Ramon & Antonia Ramirez. Carmen attended Wyandotte High School and Johnson County Community College, from where she earned an Associate’s Degree in American Sign Language. She married James Mott, Sr. on February 20, 1960, and moved with him briefly to San Diego, CA before making their home in Kansas City, KS with their five children. In 1987, the family moved to Erie, KS where they lived for 30 years prior to coming home to the Kansas City area.
Carmen spent her life serving others both professionally and voluntarily. As a stay-at-home mom she volunteered her time at her children’s schools and as an interpreter for her Hispanic friends and neighbors. Her servant’s heart led her to care for several foster children and she was always willing to volunteer her time and talent to any organization or group needing her help. Carmen was active in each parish in which she was a member, joining Queen of the Holy Rosary in Overland Park upon her return to the area in 2017. Carmen loved nothing more than being active and learning new things. She could often be found swimming, biking, working on stained glass, stone carving, in a dance or exercise class, floral arranging or traveling, to name just a few of her interests. She was very creative and as an officer of the Erie, KS Study Club she designed the Erie city flag prior to her 2017 move.
When Carmen first reentered the workforce, it was as an ESL tutor in the elementary school and as both a Spanish and deaf interpreter. She retired as an interpreter from Greenbush Cooperative in 1998. In 2008 she was honored as a Reasons to Believe Alumni by the Kansas City, KS Public Schools for being a role model who gives reasons to believe in the power of education.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at Queen of the Holy Rosary, 7023 W 71st St, Overland Park, KS 66204.
