Carol Severine Dow, 88, of Shawnee, passed away Monday, September 28, 2015, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Carol was born June 29, 1927, to the late Conrad and Emma Severine in Denver, Colorado. She attended South High School in Denver before heading to Drury College in Springfield, Missouri, to earn a bachelor's degree with honors in English in 1951. While at Drury, Carol was actively involved in Alpha Phi sorority, where she served as the social chairperson and was proud to have recruited Tommy Dorsey to play on campus. She was an accomplished writer, having several poems, essays and short stories published. Carol also served as the associate editor of the college's newspaper The Drury Mirror. After graduation she worked as a writer for KWTO radio station in Springfield, Missouri.
On June 15, 1951, Carol married John B. Dow; he preceded her in death in 2000 after nearly 50 years of marriage. Carol worked as an office manager for G.A.B. Robins for over 20 years, retiring in 2010. She was an active member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, where she served as the director of Sunday School and devoted her time to raising funds for the churches charities by managing "The Cellar Door," St. Michael and All Angels gift shop, and many other fund-raising activities.
She was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. She was active in the PTA as a room mother and volunteered at the school library, Christmas pageants and other school productions. She was her children's and grandchildren's biggest fan and attended most of their sporting events and activities. She worked as the scorekeeper and kept meticulous stats and records for her sons' baseball teams.
Carol is survived by her loving children, Nancy Dow and husband, Glenn Welch; John Dow; Jim Dow and wife, Kristi; Wendy Dow; grandsons Lucas Dow, Mitchell Dow and Nathan Dow. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Josephine Williams and Fern Severine.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Kansas 66203. A Celebration of Carol's Life will be 9:30 a.m., Friday, October 2, 2015, at the funeral home. Carol will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony in St. Michael and All Angels garden.
