Carrol H. Britain of Merriam, Kansas, died Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at his home.

He was born August 13, 1926, in Republic, Missouri, the son of Harry and Ona Britain. Carrol attended school in a one room school house and was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

Carrol was an avid KU basketball fan, golfer, hunter, and tennis player. He also loved baseball and the Kansas City Royals. He played short stop for the St. Louis Cardinals in the rookie league for two years before entering the US Army during WWII. He served his country in the South Pacific where he was awarded the bronze star, good conduct and numerous other medals. He also served in the Korean War for two years. Carrol was delighted to be chosen for the "Honor Flight" to Washington, D.C. on April 20, 2011, in recognition of his service as a veteran. He was accompanied by his son, Mickey.

Carrol worked at Nationwide Papers for 38 years and loved every minute of everyday with his fellow salesmen, mill friends, and everyone else in the industry.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Harry and Max, and a sister Wanda. He was also preceded in death by Lee Ann Britain, the mother of his children.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria, of the home; sons, Mat (Candice) of Smyrna, Tennessee and Mickey of Lenexa, Kansas; daughter Amy (Sara) of Rochester, Minnesota; step-children, James (Janet) Hataway of Overland Park, Kansas, Pamela Hook (Brad) of Kailua, Hawaii, and Jeff Hataway (Michelle) of Paradise Valley, Arizona; grandchildren, Tanner, Chad, Savannah, and Payton; step-grandchildren, Lauren, Kristen, Peter, Allie, Jade, Carly and a great-grandson due in June; nieces, Sandy Hall (Joe) of Branson, Missouri, Nancy Aliber (Steve), Dortheen "Dody" Kulp (Dan) of Overland Park, Kansas; and many wonderful cousins, friends, neighbors, nurses, doctors, along with their staff, caregivers at Shawnee Mission Medical Center and Sweetlife at Rosehill.

A celebration of Carrol's life will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas, where he was an active member and volunteer for 25 years. A visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., and a light lunch to follow.
