Caryl "Cal" Rothenberger

Caryl Dean “Cal” Rothenberger, 89, passed away at his home on June 16, 2021. He was born Feb. 2, 1932, in Marshall County, Kansas, to Oscar and Helen Nance Rothenberger.

Cal graduated from Beattie High School, Beattie, Kansas, in 1949. He was active in sports, sang in a quartet in the community, and acted in plays. He was known for being a practical joker with his brother, Melvin Rothenberger, who preceded him in death in 2016.

Cal joined the U.S. Army in 1952, going through basic training at Camp Polk, La., and then was assigned to the 37th Infantry Division. He was stationed at Fort Dix and then in 1953 was assigned to Korea, during the Korean War. He was a Military Policeman with the 519th Military Police Battalion and was honorably discharged in 1960.

Cal attended Central Kansas Technical Institute in Kansas City and was employed throughout his career at Bendix Corp., which later became Honeywell. He began as an electrician and later worked the calibrations department.

He was known for tinkering with anything mechanical or electronic. Cal was always busy, farming, flying his Cessna airplane, and operating his own mudjacking business. In later years, he was active in the American Legion and spent many evenings there dancing the night away. He loved taking photos and would often present copies to friends and family.

Cal married Evelyn Koch at St. Francis Xavier Church on July 25, 1964, in Kansas City, Missouri. She preceded him in death in 2012.

Cal is survived by his nephew, Stanley (Morgan) Rothenberger, Topeka, Kansas, and numerous other family members.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2021, at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas.

Cal will be buried at Leavenworth National Cemetery with his late wife, Evelyn.
