Charles Donald “Don” Kennett

June 28, 1930 — February 1, 2017

Charles Donald "Don" Kennett, 86, of Shawnee, Kansas passed away on February 1, 2017 at his home with family. Don was born June 28, 1930 in Bucklin, Kansas to Charley and Zula Kennett.

Don grew up in Dodge City, Kansas. He graduated from Dodge City High School in 1949. He served in the US Navy for 4 years as an aviation electrician and was stationed on the USS Yorktown during the Korean War.

After his naval service and returning to Dodge City, he married Virginia Reddy December 18th 1955. Don graduated from Washburn University in 1958 with a BBA.

After graduation, he worked as an accountant for Fairmont Foods in Dodge City until he was transferred to Mission, Kansas division office in 1962. From March 1974 he worked the largest part of his accounting and finance career at Marley Cooling Tower Co. until his retirement in June 1994.

He was a member of the Shawnee United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He enjoyed the mission trips he went on with the UMW. After touring the Navajo Ministries, he strongly supported their work. He enjoyed fishing, golf, camping and boating at the lake, big band music as well as many other genres of music.

Don was patriotic, very dedicated to his country and loved his country so much, he would have gladly given his life for our freedoms.

He most of all loved and cherished his family. He will be remembered as one who gave his time, energies and wisdom to his loved ones. Don attended and enjoyed countless, concerts, sporting events, graduations and many activities for his girls, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He always had the kindest heart, a listening ear and shared a wealth of loving, practical wisdom. He will always be remembered as generous to his family and to those in need.

Don is survived by his wife, Virginia, daughters, Sara (Michael) Coss of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and Jana (Michael "Bear") Kimberling of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, eleven grandchildren, Derek Dodd, Natasha Smith, Shauna Backlund, Kyle Dodd, Adrian Dodd, Phil Coss, Matt Coss, Kristen Coss, Katie Coss, Adam Kimberling, and Nate Coss, fourteen great-grandchildren, Ethan Backlund, Anna Backlund, Haylee Smith, Kayla Smith-Haynes, Kameron Kring, Carson Smith, Mindy McCall, Kylie Dodd, AnnaLynne Dodd, Adrian Dodd "Amos Shealy", Audrey McCall, Ben Dodd, Declan Dodd, Maria Dodd "Shealy", sister, Marge Marler of Wichita, Kansas, brother, Bill Kennett of Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Don was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Dawn Ann Dodd.

Services

A Visitation is set for 10:00 ~ 11:00 AM, Friday, February 10, 2017 at Shawnee United Methodist Church 10700 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203 with a Memorial Service immediately following at 11:00 AM.
