After 73 remarkable years, including 33 years of military service, a loving husband and caring father, James Leonard Webb, succumbed to multiple health issues on Monday, April 18, 2016, in Shawnee, Kansas. Jim, as commonly known to family and friends, was born on May 24, 1942, to Mary Jane (Humphress) Webb and Alfonso Eugene Webb, Sr. He was raised in Merriam, Kansas and was a lifelong member of the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School and joined the United States Air Force. He met is wife, Cora Louvenia Webb, on his first assignment at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas. They married on November 25, 1961, and had two daughters during their 55-year marriage.
Jim had a decorated career in the military having reached the level of Chief Master Sergeant, the highest enlisted rank in the US Air Force. During his service, Jim received numerous merit and performance medals and traveled the world with his family. Jim worked in fuels management in support of the military's aircraft and was stationed in Greenland, Japan, Guam, and Germany, in addition to numerous stateside bases. Jim's last assignment was at the Pentagon, and in 1993 he retired after serving 33 years. He found work in the Washington, DC area for a few years before returning to his hometown of Merriam. With his strong work ethic, Jim continued to work in the civilian sector as a Claims Manager for the Mechanical Protection Plan Company, Inc. in Shawnee for several more years.
Jim was well loved and respected by his extended family, friends, and coworkers. His thoughtful deeds and actions contributed to the happiness and well being of everyone who was blessed to have met him. Jim's offering of advice and personal opinion were equally matched with his love of family and generosity.
Jim is survived by his wife, Louvenia; two daughters, Cynthia (Darryl) Gary and Colette (Marcus) Wilson; four grandchildren, Alexandria (Westley) Martin, Darry James Gary, Brandon Wilson, and Olivia Wilson; one great granddaughter, Averyn Martin; two brothers, Quinton Webb, Victor Webb (Denise); five sisters; Wanda Wilkes (Carl), Cheterria Williams, Mary E. Webb, Kathleen Gabriel (Kevin), Deborah Stephens (Charles); a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alfonso Eugene Webb Sr., his mother Mary Jane (Humphress) Webb, and his brothers Alfonso E. Webb Jr. and Harvey Louis Webb.
Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 24th at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 25th at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will follow the funeral at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
