Cynthia L. Johnson of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away on September 14, 2010, at Villa St. Joseph long-term care facility in Overland Park, Kansas.
Cynthia was born on February 6, 1919, on a farm near Sparks, Kansas, to Conrad E. and Martha Mary Johnson who preceded her in death. She attended Sparks Elementary School and graduated from Sparks High School. Cynthia graduated from Highland Community College, received her undergraduate degree from Emporia State Teacher’s College and a masters degree from Kansas State University. Cynthia was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma educational sorority and also an Eastern Star member. Her first teaching position was at Iowa Point, Kansas, teaching the primary grades 1 to 4. She also taught first grade in Highland, Kansas, before going to Highlands Elementary School located in the Prairie School District, in Prairie Village, Kansas, in 1958. Cynthia retired in 1991 after dedicating fifty-two years to teaching children. She truly loved teaching, believing all children had the ability to learn and encouraged them to always do their best. She said, “I’m happiest when I’m teaching as every day is like the first day I taught-fun for all!” Cynthia was the first teacher to be honored in 1984 as an excellent first grade teacher in Kansas City and the surrounding counties.
Cynthia is survived by her brother Conrad and his wife Jean of Troy, Kansas; nephews Greg Johnson, Troy, Kansas and Kreg Johnson, Platte City, Missouri; niece Mary Jean Kuester, Lakeview, Arkansas; and several great nephews and nieces.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Villa St. Joseph for their care during the last several years. They also especially want to thank J.J. Shipley from Daughters & Company for her regular visits and companionship.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Highland Community College, Highland, Kansas.
