Daniel F. Land

September 21, 1929 — January 11, 2015

Daniel F. Land 85, of Shawnee, KS passed away January 11, 2015. Born in Tuscaloosa, AL to Paul and Helen Land on September 21, 1929 his family moved during World War II to Mississippi and then Richland, WA eventually settling in Oak Ridge, TN after the war. Dan graduated from Oak Ridge HS in 1948. He soon joined the Navy and was serving in the Pacific at the start of the Korean War aboard the USS Boxer. In December 1950 he was stationed at the US Naval Training Station in Olathe, KS where he met his future wife Mary "Sugar" Jakobe. After receiving his degree from Rockhurst College he moved his family to Shawnee in 1958.

Dan was a life member of American Legion Post 327 where he served as Service Officer, Commander, Color Guard Coordinator and Bugler. He held a number of positions in the Second District including Adjutant, Vice Commander and Commander. He was a life member of the Voiture 1510 of the 40 and 8 where he served as Correspondent, and Chef de Gare. Dan went though the state chairs and became Grand Chef de Gare and the National Sous Chef de Chemin de Fer (National Vice-Commander).

He was also a life member of VFW Post 7397 where he served as Chaplin and Service Officer. He was also a member of The Korean War Veterans of Missouri, Chapter 2.

Dan worked as an accountant, owned a retail store, owned an accounting practice, and served 21 years with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department.

He is survived by his brother John of Chattanooga, TN and his eight children. Mark (Eileen), Sandy Morris, Ellen Koehler (Stan), Paul (Karen), Steve (Micki), Fred (Sonja), Teresa Vest (Leonard), and Hal (Kendra). He was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, mother, sister Toni Greer, great-granddaughter Elizabeth, and wife Mary of 55 ½ years.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 pm at the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS. The funeral will be Friday at 10 am at the funeral home with the burial at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens east of 75th and K-7 Hwy.
