Donald J. Curry, Sr.

November 11, 1915 — September 23, 2011

Donald J. Curry, Sr., 95, of Lenexa, Kansas, former Johnson County Clerk and Johnson County Treasurer, passed away, a loyal Jayhawk, on Friday, September 23, 2011, at Sweet Life of Shawnee.

Don was born in the Argentine district of Kansas City, Kansas, on November 11, 1915, to Clyde L. Curry and Augusta Monahan Curry. Around 1930 the family moved to the Hocker Grove area of Merriam. Don remained a Merriam resident for over 75 years, and a life-long Kansas resident. He graduated from Shawnee Mission Rural High School in 1933. Don served in the US Navy in World War II. In September, 1935 he married Glenna L. Davis of Merriam who preceded him in death in January of 1978. In August, 1979, Don married Virginia Helms of Merriam who also preceded him in death in August of 2005.

In 1958, Don was elected to the first of 14 terms as a Johnson County official on the Republican ticket. He also served as Merriam City Treasurer for many years.

Mr. Curry was preceded in death by a son, David L. Curry, a grandson, Daniel L. Curry, by step-daughters; Judy Dempster and Mary Beth Tucker, his parents and two sisters and their husbands.

Don is survived by a son, Donald, Jr. (Carole) of Lyndon,Kansas; two daughters, Nancy (Ted) Snell of Trimble, Missouri and Joy E. Curry of Lenexa,Kansas; a step-son Paul E. Helms; step-son-in-law Joe Tucker, 11 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

The family extends their sincere appreciation to the staff of Sweet Life at Shawnee for their compassion in caring for Papa.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at the chapel. Burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
