Donald Shirley, 85, of Mission, KS, passed away on May 23rd, 2019. He was born on March 20th, 1934 in Kansas City, KS to Manford and Layel Shirley. Don has departed this world to be with his heavenly father. He leaves his colleagues and friends of 36 years as a librarian and educator for the Turner Unified School District, Shawnee School District and Shawnee Mission Unified School District. He also leaves his longtime friends from John's Space Age Donuts, Read it Again Bookstore, Friends of the Johnson County Library, Shawnee Park Christian Church, Valley View United Methodist Church and St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
Don always tried to help others, to make them laugh and feel good about themselves. The saying from a greeting card best represented a major philosophy of his day to day life; "You're one of those people who begin each morning with the question, "Now who can I make happy today?"
Don enjoyed reading, listening to jazz piano and Barbara Streisand , book collecting from auctions and estate sales, and eating donuts. He loved the ocean and rough natural beaches.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; of 42 years. He is survived by his daughters, Sue (Harold) Robertson; Donna (Mark) Williams; granddaughter Nicole (Ben) Boline; son, Steve Shirley (Daniel); stepson, Dave Shirley granddaughter Shanna Gardner; brother, Dale (Linda) Shirley; and his very special friend and love, Sarah Wille.
A visitation will be held at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS 66203 on Wednesday, May 29th from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 AM. Burial at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
Memorial donations in Don's name may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church or Friends of Johnson County Library.
