Doris Kay Atwell

Doris Kay Atwell, age 86, passed away peacefully September 15, 2024 at St. Luke’s Hospice House of Kanas City with family by her side. She was born in Kansas City, KS in 1938 where she was raised with her two brothers and five sisters. She would eventually settle in Shawnee, KS to raise her own family. 

 Kay’s life was one dedicated to giving. Nothing brought more joy to her heart than providing for others, especially her friends and family: however, no one was a stranger in Kay’s eyes. If you came into her life, you were likely to receive something from her whether you knew her well or not. 

 She worked for JCPenney for over 30 years in the area fraud and loss prevention where she made many close friends whom she treasured until the end of her life. 

 In addition to her work, Kay’s favorite pastimes included baking and gardening. If she wasn’t in the kitchen, she was in her yard planting flowers or playing with her beloved Frenchie, Phoebe. 

 Through the years, she enjoyed traveling with her children to various Scottish Highland Games and figure skating competitions. She also enjoyed exploring the world with her husband, with Scotland and Quebec being among her favorite destinations. 

 Kay is preceded in death by her son Ronnie Atwell, her much-loved daughter-in-law Barbara Atwell, and her faithful Boston Terrier, Penelope. 

 She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Ronald; her sister Gloria; a son and daughter; and their respective families including her four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews that she loved and adored in addition to her cherished caregiver, Carissa.
