Doris Mae Van Garsse, 85, of Mission, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at her home with her loving husband and family by her side.
Doris was born March 30, 1927, to the late John and Elizabeth Burke in Chicago, Illinois. On September 24, 1949, Doris married Leopold Van Garsse in Chicago, Illinois, and they moved to Mission, Kansas, in 1956. Doris was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church where she was a member of St. Bernadette's Women's Circle and was active with the St. Pius PTO for over 50 years and served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Doris worked as a Secretary for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas for over 17 years. She was a very loving and caring person and enjoyed volunteering her time with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her greatest legacy was her family, and she loved putting on "Command Performances" that were mandatory for all family members. She never missed a Christmas morning with her children and grandchildren. On St. Patrick's Day the family home was filled with the smell of Doris's traditional Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage, and turkey and stuffing on Thanksgiving Day.
She is preceded in death by her son John Edward Van Garsse in 1961. Doris is survived by her loving husband Lee, of 63 years; four sons, James J. Van Garsse and wife Karen, Joseph P. Van Garsse and wife Lisa, Jason L. Van Garsse and wife Anne, and William F. Scott and wife Carolyn; five daughters, Jane M. Pickett and husband Timothy, Jean E. Hillmer and husband Reid, Jody Horn and husband David, Julie A. Hosty and husband Thomas, and Jill C. Hosty and husband Brian; 14 grandsons, Ryan J. Van Garsse, Timothy A. Pickett, IV and wife Jennifer, Jeremy P. Pickett, Ryan B. Pickett, Eric M. Hillmer, Mark A. Hillmer, Paul J. Hillmer, Jeffrey B. Horn, Daniel P. Horn, Thomas C. Hosty, Jr., Jonathan C. Hosty, Liam J. Hosty, Brian C. Hosty, Jr., and Simeon M. Scott; 11 granddaughters, Jessica L. Van Garsse, Elizabeth M. Brady and husband Ryan, Emma L. Hillmer, Eileen R. Horn, Mary Kate Hosty, Elizabeth J. Hosty, Catherine L. Van Garsse, Julia E. Van Garsse, Caroline M. Van Garsse, Lauren N. Scott, and Keely R. Scott; two great grandsons, Timothy A. Pickett, V and Liam M. Brady; and one great granddaughter, Mya L. Pickett.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 29, 2012, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5500 Woodson, Mission, Kansas. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Saturday, at the church, a Rosary will be prayed at 9:45 a.m. Burial will follow Mass at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Lenexa.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the church or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 6811 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Mission, Kansas 66202.
