Dorothea “Dottie” L. Kiene

July 12, 1930 — April 15, 2019

Dorothea (Dottie) L. Kiene, 88, of Shawnee, passed away peacefully with her children by her side, Monday, April 15, 2019 at her home in Shawnee Kansas.

Dottie was born in Clifton, KS July 12, 1930 to the late Herbert and Myrtle Kinman.  She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1948 and worked as a dental assistant and in retail clothing sales in Manhattan KS.  In 1953, Dottie enrolled at the University of Kansas City in the first ever Dental Hygiene program of its kind in the area, graduating from the program in May of 1955.  She married Dr. James (Jim) R. Kiene on Sept. 4, 1955.  Together in July of 1956, Dottie and Jim started the first generation of what has now become three generations of Kiene family dental practices in the downtown Shawnee area.

Dottie and Jim raised 5 children and attended First Baptist Church of Shawnee.  Dottie's interests included being a loving caregiver for family, cooking, nutrition, reading and giving support and encouragement to others - everyone was made to feel like family.  She was an enthusiastic advocate for local Shawnee family-owned businesses, supporting them faithfully.  She loved animals, feeding birds, squirrels, stray cats and dogs, even caring for wounded or orphaned wild animals (no snakes).  She considered herself to be a dyed in the wool K-State Wildcat all her life.  Family and many friends dearly loved Dottie.  She will be greatly missed.

Dottie is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. James R. Kiene; son, Thomas Kiene; sister, Evelyn Henton; and stepmother, Nell Kinman.  She is survived by her children, Dr. James "Pete" R. Kiene, Jr. and wife Becky; Susan Wheeler and husband Bryan; Timothy Kiene and wife Christina; Elizabeth "Betsy" Logan and husband Mark; 8 grandchildren, Douglas Kiene and wife Amanda; Dr. Joshua Kiene and wife Bridget; Anna Gromer and husband Luke; Dr. Breanna Headley and husband David; Alexis Wheeler; John Kiene; Ava Kiene; Grace Logan; and seven great grandchildren with two of the seven on the way.
