Dorothy M. Coatney

d. November 30, 2014

Dorothy Marion Coatney, 94, of Westwood, KS passed away peacefully Nov 30th 2014 with her family at her side. Dorothy was the loving wife of her deceased husband Homer. Dorothy and Homer married on Oct 28, 1941 in Galesburg, IL and came to Kansas City in 1945 and joined St. Agnes Catholic Church where they raised 5 children. Dorothy widowed at the age of 42 and in spite of having to raise 5 kids on her own, she delivered many years of charitable work at St. Agnes, then working for Catholic Charities for 35 years where she took up numerous charitable causes including starting food drives, distributing food baskets, housing infants up for adoption, sponsoring Vietnamese refugees and delivered many other faith driven acts of kindness that affected the lives of many. Outside of her giving to others, Dorothy's primary joy in life was in helping raise and care for her 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren (with 3 more on the way). After health challenges forced her out of the home to assisted living and a nursing home, Dorothy continued to serve others and draw them closer to their Christian faith by re-energizing Rosary groups and, in her last years, simply bringing her strong faith, quiet kindness and caring attitude to all those whom she met at Villa St. Francis in Olathe, KS.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Homer, parents Tracy and Josephine Chapman; Galesburg, IL and grandson Sean Martin, KCMO. She will be dearly missed by her five children and their spouses: Jerry (Denise); Barbara Martin; Mary Beth Bitter (Karl) Tom (Julie); Brian (Tammy); grandchildren: Jesse, Emily, Amanda, Steve, Chris, Megan, Spencer, Kelli, Bobby, Will, Adam, Aaron, Clay, McKenna, and great grandchildren: Grace, Emma, Colin, Kendall, Caroline, Allison, Maggie.

The Rosary will be said at 8 am with Visitation between 8:15 -10am followed by a funeral Mass at 10am on Friday Dec. 12th, 2014, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Roeland Park, KS. Lunch will be served after.
