Dorothy Ann Kohake

May 31, 1932 — October 5, 2021

Dorothy Ann Kohake, aged 89, passed away peacefully on October 5th, 2021 at Garden Terrace in Overland Park after a long-term and brave struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Services will be held on Saturday, October 16th, 2021 at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, Kansas. A Rosary will be prayed at 9 am, with the visitation following until 10 am. The funeral service will begin at 10 am at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest beside her late husband, John Kohake, at Resurrection Cemetery following the service.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Anna Pearl & Nicholas Wiskur; three sisters, Rose, Winnie & Pauline; seven brothers, Lawrence, Frank, Neal, Bob, Joe, Dale & Clinton; and her son-in-law, Mike Brand. She is survived by four daughters, Debbie (Pat) Casey of Overland Park, Kansas, Linda (Bob) Albertson of Land O Lakes, Florida, Lissa (Dan) Leathers of Overland Park, Kansas and Shawna Brand of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.; six grandchildren, Heather (Andrew) Forsman, Ashley Albertson, Sean (Jamie) Casey, Scott (Shannon) Casey, Anna Brand and Marie (Trevor) Clark; five great-grandchildren, Lily & Liam Forsman, Ellie & Emily Casey and Oliver Albertson. Dorothy moved to Kansas City from Windsor, Missouri after high school. She met the love of her life, John, and they were married on September 18, 1954. She loved taking care of her family and helped her husband with his business. Later in life she would work for an insurance company. She very much enjoyed crafts, sewing, painting and square dancing with her husband. Dorothy loved being with her grandchildren and taught them to be good people and to work hard. She was a very kind person and would always say "No one knows what a person has been through until they walk a mile in their moccasins." Even as her mind deteriorated, she would always ask what she could do to help someone and frequently told them she loved them and that they were a wonderful person. Her family and all those she touched with her love will miss her greatly.

Dorothy's family wishes to extend the sincerest thank you to the staff at Garden Terrace in Overland Park. Dorothy was a resident there for over 3 years, and the love and kindness that was shown to her will forever be remembered.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association - Heart of America Chapter.
