Dorothy G. Pickup

September 11, 1920 — September 29, 2018

Dorothy G. Pickup, 98, of Shawnee, passed away Saturday, September 29, at Shawnee Hills Senior Living.

Dorothy was born September 11, 1920 to the late Raymond and May Groner in Syracuse, NY.  Dorothy earned her degree from Syracuse University, where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.  After college, Dorothy joined the U.S. Army as Dietician and served in the European Theater during World War II.

Shortly after returning from the war,  Dorothy married Gordon Pickup on June 25, 1949 in New York. Dorothy and Gordon moved to Kansas,  enjoyed living at Lake Quivira.  She loved being on the water, boating and swimming with family. Dorothy enjoyed playing tennis, bridge, golf, she had lots of interests, also involved in many community organizations.  She led an active and adventurous life from learning to fly an airplane and finally stopped playing tennis at the young age of 75 when she no longer could find anyone to play with. Her biggest enjoyment in life was family, she especially loved time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Gordon.  She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Zook and husband Bill Poe; 3 grandchildren, Michael Zook and wife Heidi; David Zook and wife Laura; Stacey Zook; and two great grandchildren, Harlan and Zoey.

Celebration of Life Services

A celebration of Dorothy's life will be 4 p.m. Friday, October 5 at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208.

Memorial Contributions

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, MO, 64105.
