Dorris J. Givens

October 6, 1927 — May 12, 2017

Dorris Jean Givens passed away on May 12, 2017.  She was born on October 6, 1927 in Marshall, MO to Edward and Florence Pauling. Dorris' twin sister Dorthea Patrick preceded her in death.  She is survived by her nephews Michael E. Patrick and Ronald G. Patrick.

Dorris and her twin sister Dorothea were born just before the Great Depression in Marshal, MO. Although Dorothea was born first, Dorris said her sister wasn't the wiser of the two. They grew up on a small farm in Corder, MO, and moved to Kansas City after the death of their father.

Dorris and her sister went to Manual High School in Kansas City, MO. After high school, Dorris started working for CNA Insurance. In 1955, she moved to Los Angeles, CA and lived there for 3 years before returning to Kansas City. She later moved to Chicago, IL in 1961, returning yet again to Kansas City in 1964. She continued working for CNA Insurance until her retirement in 1998.

Dorris was a member of the Valley View United Methodist Church for many years. She enjoyed preparing programs on Tuesdays, and serving as a greeter on Sundays.

Dorris was a lifelong sports fan. One of the highlights was attending Super Bowl IV in 1970 in New Orleans, LA, where the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings. Dorris loved the Kansas City Royals, and was a season ticket holder for years with her sister Dorothea. She even traveled to many away games with friends.

Dorris loved her nephews, great-nephews, and great-nieces. She was always willing to babysit, cook food, and hang out at the pool with the kids. Almost equally, Dorris loved pets, and was always willing to pet-sit whenever needed. Dorris was a generous gift giver. She always went the extra mile for a special gift, and presented it with her signature wrapping.

Dorris and her twin sister Dorothea shared a special bond. Later in life, this close relationship became a testament to the importance of family.

Dorris Givens will be remembered as a loving and devoted sister, aunt, and friend. She was always there with a constant smile, sharp wit, and sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her family, who loved her dearly.

Lastly, the family would like to express their deep appreciation to everyone at The Heritage of Overland Park for the exceptional care and support she received.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, May 15, 2017 at Pleasant View Cemetery in Shawnee, KS.
