Dorothy “Dottie” Ann McCrary, 86, of Overland Park, KS, died peacefully on October 7, 2024 at Trustwell Living of Overland Park. She was born at Norwood Methodist Hospital in Birmingham, AL, on April 4, 1938 to Dwight and Sara Argo (DeVan).
Dottie—don’t call her Dorothy, graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dallas, TX, in 1956 and attended Texas Tech University where she pledged Alpha Phi Women’s Fraternity. Later in life she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from University of St. Mary in 1994. After raising her children, her chosen profession was as an addiction recovery counselor.
She was a vibrant woman known for her Southern hospitality and colorful sense of style. An avid Chiefs fan and lover of bargains, she was known to her grandchildren as “Yaya." Through her work in Alcoholics Anonymous, she celebrated many years of recovery. She was an avid reader and many publications will miss her subscriptions. She was a member of Lenexa United Methodist Church.
Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Norstrud; granddaughter, Kristin McCrary; father of her children, Charles McCrary; two children-in-law, Wendy and J.D.; brother, Gene Argo; and her parents. Survivors include her children, Jana (Daryl) Dominguez-Peuker and Charles (Karin) McCrary; three stepchildren; grandchildren, Andrew (Shalynn) and Daniel Dominguez, Jessica (Dave) Peyton, and Jacob (Leah) McCrary; great-grandchildren, Vincent and Wendy Peyton, and Lucy McCrary; and close friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, KS. She will be entombed beside her husband at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, KS. In lieu of flowers, gifts of remembrance can be given to The World Wildlife Fund, or to Monarch Hospice and Palliative Care, 7451 Switzer St., Suite 100, Merriam, KS 66203.
