Dr. Peter “Pete” Hathaway

November 3, 1931 — February 4, 2014

Dr. Peter Hathaway (Pete), M.D., 82, of Merriam, KS passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014. Dr. Hathaway was born on November 3, 1931 to Dr. John Seabury and Margaret Hathaway in Boston, Massachusetts.

He graduated from Harvard University in 1953 with a degree in biochemistry. After graduation he became a member of the United States Army where he was stationed in Japan. He later earned his Doctorate in Medicine from Albany Medical College in 1960. That same day, he married his beautiful wife, Patricia Ann Quinn. He then completed his Exchange Internship in Sheffield, England. After returning from England, he completed a fellowship in genetics at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland and later worked at Cornell and Mount Sinai. Pete moved to Kansas with his family in 1973 to conduct genetic research for the University of Kansas. He was in private practice at St. Joseph Medical Center for 25 years and served on many hospital and medical staff committees during that time. For 17 years, Dr. Hathaway also donated his time and talents to the Migrant Worker's Clinic in Kansas City, Kansas.

Pete leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia, and his five children; Lauren and husband Robert, Sian, Mark, Jared, Michael and wife Lori. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Daniel and wife Jacqueline, Lindsay and husband Thomas, Michael and wife Christina, Megan, Jeremy, Kayla, Ashley, Kara, Jared and seven great-grandchildren, Christian, Caleb, Carly, Grace, Annabelle, Carson, and Lydia. Pete is also survived by many wonderful friends.

Pete was known for his love of music, fly-fishing, reading, and passion for learning, but he will be remembered mostly for his generosity, compassion, and love of his family.

Services

Private family services were held for Dr. Hathaway per his request.
