Dr. Thomas H. Johns

b. March 24, 1931

On July 22, 2018, Dr. Thomas Howard Johns died at the age of 87 years old.

Dr. Thomas H Johns was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan March 24, 1931. He graduated from Howe High School in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1949. He received his BA degree from Hanover College in Indiana in 1953, a bachelor of divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1956, a master's and doctor's degree from Indiana University in 1960 and 1961. While a student at Hanover, Dr. Johns was active in campus life inter-collegiate football. He was selected all-conference tackle four years, little all-state three years, and little all-American his senior year holding the record for sacking quarterbacks. From 1957 through 1961, he served as Chaplain and Dean of Men at Hanover College. He was ordained as a Presbyterian ministered.  After completing his doctor's degree in higher education at Indiana University, he became Vice President for Planning and Development at the University of Dubuque. He then served as Vice President at Missouri Valley College, Marshall, Missouri. In 1967, Dr. Johns became President of Pikeville College in Pikeville, Kentucky. In 1971, he became the Vice-President of Tarkio College in Tarkio Missouri. Starting in 1975, Dr. Johns was asked by the Disciples of Christ church to develop Foxwood Springs Living Center in Raymore, MO. For many years, he served as the Executive Director of Foxwood, and also functioned as a regional overseer and consultant for other retirement communities.

Thomas Johns married Barbara McWhorter Johns in 1953. They were married 39 years and had three children together: Timothy Johns, Michael Johns, and Deborah Johns Papp. He was a grandfather to 7 grandchildren (Alissa, Jason, Sarah, Shelby, Andrew, Rachel, Zechariah). He was also a great grandfather to 11 great grandchildren. In 2005, Tom Johns married Darnelle Johns.  He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara Johns, his brother Jack Johns, parents Ralph and Irene Johns, Son-in-law Richard Papp and his third wife Darnell Johns. Tom Johns will be loved and remembered by his sister Nancy Johns, many nieces and nephews, his three children and their spouses Janet and Patti, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Darnelle's family and many friends.

Memorial Service

A memorial service will be conducted at the Rock Family KC church building on Saturday, August 11th, 2018 at 10:30 AM. The address is 934 Norton Ave, Kansas City, Missouri, 64127
