Edythe McNown, of Fairway, Kansas died June 29, 2018.  Edythe was born in Torrington, Wyoming and was raised on a ranch outside of Ft. Laramie, Wyoming by parents Charles Mead and Ada Guy Sandercock.

She showed great musical talent at an early age and began lessons in piano from her mother. Edythe received a Bachelors of Music from The University of Wyoming, a Masters of Arts in piano from Kansas City University. She attended the Aspen School of Music and post graduate Masters Classes from Wyoming University and Kansas City University.

She married Myron McNown in 1954 and they raised 3 children: Cynthia, Douglas and Gregory.

Edythe was an accomplished accompanist/pianist/teacher and used those talents her lifelong, both professionally and voluntarily.

She co-founded Civic Opera Theater of Kansas City (f/k/a Meistersingers) which she served as music director and pianist (both rehearsals and performances), and board member for many years.

Edythe was elected into Phi Kappa Phi, Honorary Phi Sigma Iota and her biography was profiled in Marquis' Who's Who in American, Who's Who in American Women and American Education.

Edythe received the Jack Henry Pyramid of The Arts Award; Citation by Kansas Federation of Music; Annual Award by the Kansas City Musical Club; Sword of Honor, Rose of Honor, Rose of Dedication, Diamond Sword of Honor and National Leadership Award by the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity for Women.

She was a member of the K.C. Alumnae chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, Kansas City Musical Club, Musical Arts Club and Second Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters, and her loving husband. She is survived by her children, six grandchildren, two great-grand children, and nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services

Memorial service will be Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 55th & Oak, Kansas City, MO.

Memorial Contributions

In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made in her honor to Sigma Alpha Iota Scholarship Fund, or Second Presbyterian Church.
