Eleanor Barkus

February 23, 1918 — June 26, 2017

Eleanor Barkus, 99, of Shawnee, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Eleanor was born February 23, 1918 to the late James Robert and Lucille Black in South Park area of Merriam, KS.  Eleanor graduated from Rosedale High School in 1935 and went on to earn a Bachelor's of Arts in Music Education from the University of Kansas, where she was a member of the Dean's Choir.

After college Eleanor went on to teach second grade at South Park Elementary, as well as fifth and sixth grade at Roseland Elementary and Westwood View in Roeland Park and Fairway.  During her teaching years, Eleanor worked for the Dorothy Lee Modeling Agency.  In 1968, Eleanor retired from teaching and went on to help with the Burt Barkus Insurance Agency.  Later in life she obtained her Commercial Real Estate license and sold various Tool & Dye businesses in the Kansas City area.  She also briefly sold time shares in Florida.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Peggy A. Bales and husband Bob; a grandson, Patrick Bales and wife Kimberly and great grandson, William Bales.  She is also preceded in death by her ex-husband, Burt Barkus.   The family would like to extend their appreciation to Shawnee Heartland Assisted Living and Kansas City Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion Eleanor received while in their care.

Visitation and Services

Visitation will be 12:30 to 1 p.m. Friday June 30 at the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS.  Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Eleanor will be laid to rest in Johnson County Memorial Gardens in Overland Park.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
