Ernest “Larry” Fisher

October 18, 1942 — November 22, 2018

Ernest "Larry" Fisher, 76, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away on November 22, 2018. He was born in Beatrice, NE, on October 18, 1942, to Ernest and Berniece (Ackerman) Fisher. He is survived by wife Sandy; daughter Amber Fisher of Shawnee, KS; son/ daughter-in-law Darin and Monica Fisher of Overland Park, KS; and sister/ brother-in-law Lester and Trudy (Fisher) Wickenkamp of Lincoln, NE.

Larry grew up on a farm in Virginia, NE, and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before he was drafted in the Army. He served his country as a Personnel Specialist, with a rank of Sp5 E-5, from 1963 - 1967 at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. It was there that he met the love of his life, Sandra Joye Williams, and they were married on March 4, 1967.

He then began a 36-year career with Farmers Insurance. He was an underwriter for eight years in Overland Park, KS, before joining the sales department. In 1977, he transferred to Oklahoma City, OK, where he was a Division Agency Manager for the next 17 years. He then returned to Shawnee, KS, where he served in various roles with the company until his retirement in 2003.

He was an avid woodworker and a fantastic cook. The two things he loved most in this world were Nebraska Cornhusker football and his family. He spent his retirement years working with Trudy to maintain his father's and grandfather's farms in Virginia, NE. He also enjoyed staying in touch with his former co-workers and Army buddies. Everyone will surely miss his daily email jokes or updates, and the stories he could tell were legendary!

Larry was a wonderful husband, a devoted father, and a loving brother - he was respected by everyone who knew him. He will be missed more than he could ever imagine. We feel one his favorite sayings is the perfect way to describe him: "The measure of a man is not in the number of years he lived, but rather the number of people who are glad he did."

A visitation will be held on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, KS. A second visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Fox Funeral Home in Beatrice, NE. Graveside service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Beatrice, NE.
