Faye Emma Brown Potter

Faye Emma Brown Potter, 99, of Shawnee, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Shawnee Gardens.

Born Feb. 25, 1916 in Waukegan, Illinois to Clem and Clara Brown. She came to Kansas in 1922 with her father, twin sister, and little brother. Her father entered traveling ministry and she, her sister and brother stayed in many homes, including Margaret’s Orphan’s Home in Hacienda Heights, CA.

In 1930, she went to Friends Haviland Academy (now Barkley’s College). Through traveling with the Friends choir, she met Blanche and Adolph McFadden of Stafford, KS. They had no children and took her into their home until she graduated from Stafford High School in 1934. She married Howard Curtis Potter in 1934 and they attended Asbury College in KY. They returned to Stafford and taught school in a one room school house, worked in the Stafford community and raised their three children. They built and operated the Potter’s Dairy and Ice Cream Parlor from 1948 to 1956.

She moved to California in 1961 and worked for the city of Oroville and Kaiser Center in Oakland until she retired in 1974. She lived with her daughters, sharing time in Virginia, Honolulu, and Shawnee, KS until 2004 when she moved to her own townhouse in Shawnee, KS. She used her talents to sew wedding dresses, decorate cakes, and crochet intricate baby clothing. She was a talented artist and painted over 3,000 paintings of landscapes, pets, and flowers. She attended St. Joseph Church in Shawnee and St. Philip Church in Falls Church, VA. Her favorite saying was “Keep looking up” and her last words to Judy were “Will I see you again?”

Faye is preceded in death by her twin sister Fern Rosa, sister, June; two brothers, Kyril and Boris. She is survived by her children, Judy McMullen and husband Mickey; Patricia Patrick and husband Meredith; Howard "Skip" Potter; three brothers, Sonny Brown; Burt Grant and wife Susie; Gary Brown and wife June; two granddaughters, Micki McMullen and Tammi Wirsig and husband Gene; four great grandchildren, Cory McMullen; Amanda Bringus and husband Cory; Adam Sherman; Daniel McMullen and wife Kayla; and 4 great great grandchildren.

Visitation and Services

Wednesday, September 16, 2015 6 to 8 p.m. at Amos Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS. Private family memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.
