Fern Coombs

October 28, 1927 — August 2, 2021

“You taught us the courage of stars before you left
How light carries on endlessly, even after death
With shortness of breath, you explained the infinite
How rare and beautiful it is to even exist”

Fern Coombs, 93, was born on October 28th, 1927, in Bedford Iowa. She was the daughter of Bert Holland Hess and Mary Isabelle LeFever Hess. She passed away on August 2nd, 2021 after complications from surgery. Fern graduated from Central High School in 1945 and attended Nursing School at UMKC-Trinity/Lutheran Nursing College.

She married Dan L.F. Coombs, II in Reno, Nevada on June 30th, 1946 while Dan was stationed nearby for the Army. They had three children, Dan L.F. Coombs III, Susan Coombs McClintick, and Sandra Coombs Page. Fern and Dan lived across the country including California and Indiana, until Dan retired, and they returned to Olathe, Kansas to be closer to family.

They were married for 56 years when Dan passed away in 2002. After focusing on her family and husband for years, Fern devoted her time to volunteering with the Parkinson Foundation and later returned to work as a receptionist at Beller’s Dance and Gymnastics studio. She loved working with all the children and Diane. She was an avid Bridge player and continued to play whenever she could find partners who met her standards. She enjoyed traveling and one of her favorite trips was to Australia with her church. Fern always made time for family whether it was to simply give good advice or open her home. She was active in several churches, enjoyed the arts, daily exercise and was known for making the best brisket on the planet. She was also known for being strong, organized and always looking perfectly put together.

Fern was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Dan L.F. Coombs II, her sister Norma Larbig, her son Dan L.F. Coombs, III and her daughter Sandra Page.

Fern is survived by and will be missed by her daughter, Sue McClintick, her son-in-law John McClintick, her grandchildren: Michelle & Richard Perrin, Aaron Marvin & Stephanie Knowlton, Jill McClintick, Paul & Desiree Marvin, her great grandchildren Shanna Stout, Tanner Stout & Mallory Maryman, Andrew Knowlton, Elena Marvin, Alex Marvin, and her great-great grandchildren Benny Stout and Haven Stout. She also loved, and was loved by all the in-laws and outlaws which are too many to list, but she especially appreciated the kindness and care of Sue McClintick, Diane Fessler and Sandy Jones over the last couple of years.
