Dr. Franklin G. Bichlmeier, 86, of Overland Park, KS passed away Friday, January 11, 2019 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center from complications of pneumonia.

Franklin was born January 10, 1933 to the late Frank and Elizabeth Bichlmeier in Kansas City, KS.  Dr. Bichlmeier graduated from St. Benedict's College with a bachelor's degree in Pre-Medicine in 1954 and attended the University of Kansas Medical School where he earned a Doctorate of Medicine in 1958.  While attending medical school he married Caryl Ostermeyer on August 17, 1957.  He continued his professional development at St. Margaret's Hospital in Kansas City, KS where served his Internship and Residency. In July of 1962, Frank and Caryl moved to Cleveland, OH so Frank could serve his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.  Dr. Bichlmeier returned to the Kansas City area and entered private practice in 1964 until his retirement on March 31, 1997.

He was a member of several professional organizations including Southwestern Surgical Congress, American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Cardiology, American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons and the Pan-American Medical Association.  Dr. Bichlmeier also served as a past-president for the Kansas City Southwest Clinic Society, Wyandotte County, Kansas Medical Society, Kansas Medical Society and the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts.  He also served as an Alternate Delegate from Kansas for the American Medical Association and Chairman for the Department of Surgery for Bethany and St. Margaret Hospitals.

Dr. Bichlmeier is survived by his loving wife Caryl; two daughters, Cheryl Vestweber and husband Michael; Kathryn David and husband Kurt; a son, Mark Bichlmeier and wife Kimberly; and four grandchildren, Jennifer David; Hayden David; Rachel Huffman and Gavin Bichlmeier.

Visitation and Services

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m.  Wednesday, January 16, at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, KS where the Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 17th at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 14201 Nall Avenue, Leawood, KS 66223.  He will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery in the Prince of Peace Mausoleum in Lenexa, KS.
