Gary L. Butler

Gary L. Butler, 77, passed away September 19, 2022 at Olathe Hospice, Olathe, Kansas.
Gary was born on October 7, 1944 in Nevada, Missouri to Wendell L. Butler and Nell Withrow. He
graduated from Grandview High School, Grandview, Missouri in 1962. After high school, he began a 30
year career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Starting as a lineman, he worked his way up to
Staff Manager, retiring in 1991 at the young age of 47. He worked at several different endeavors after
retiring, one of them as a licensed electrician.


Gary was Master of Masonic Lodge 436, Overland Park, Kansas in 1975. He was very active with Moila
Shriners in St. Joseph, Missouri, serving as Potentate in 1998. Gary also served on the Board of Directors
of the Shriners Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri and was Director of the Moila Hot Sand Bugs in
1999. Gary was a member of the Brookdale Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph, Missouri and served as a
counselor with the Grief Share program from 2008 to 2018.


Gary’s passions were NASCAR, Indy racing, and antique cars, especially his beloved 1965 Pontiac
Bonneville convertible that had belonged to his parents. He loved music of all kinds, especially Country
music and dancing.


Gary never met a stranger. He made friends wherever he went and with a simple hello or good
morning, he would hear someone’s life story.


He is survived by his lifelong love, Marcia, two daughters, Melanie Butler and Caitlynn Butler, three
stepchildren, Steven Bishop, Michael Bishop and Bradley (Sara) Bishop, and two step grandchildren, Sam
and Daniel, his cousin Sue Scott Rich, and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell
and Nell Butler, his sister, Jane Gorman and nephew, Mark Johns.


CELEBRATION OF LIFE
Visitation will be from 10:30-11:00 a.m., Friday, October 7, 2022, with a Celebration of Life service following at 11:00 a.m., at Amos Family Funeral Home.
