Gary L. Sunday, Sr., 72, of Paola, KS passed away Sunday, October 29, 2017 at St. Luke's South Hospital.
Gary was born December 31, 1944 in Kansas City, MO to the late Leeland and Maxine Sunday. He graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1963. Shortly after graduating he married his high school sweetheart, Gayle McGaughy. Gary and Gayle met while volunteering for the Rolling Pioneers wheelchair basketball team. Gary worked as a bricklayer and carpenter before retiring from the University of Kansas Medical Center as a Carpenter in 2000. He was skilled in all the building trades and enjoyed using his talents to help others. He was an active member of the Jaycee's.
While living in Easton, KS; Gary served as a volunteer firefighter and was a certified First Responder. He was an avid outdoorsman who looked forward to hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Gary was a doting grandfather, and loved spoiling his 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He liked to take time to admire the scenery and always opted to take the back roads to wherever he was going. Gary will always be remembered for his GREAT sense of humor. He is also preceded in death by a sister, Carollyn Miller and two grandsons, Jesse Gochenour and Danny Sunday.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Gayle Sunday; his children, Gary L. Sunday, Jr.; Genny L. Gochenour and husband Jim; Gregory L. Sunday and wife Carrie; Grant L. Sunday and wife Shannon; a brother, George Sunday and wife Jan; two sisters, Billie Johnson and Melody Sunday; 8 grandchildren, Kelsey Gochenour; Michael Gochenour; Emily Gochenour; James Gochenour; Reagan Sunday; Grant Seute; Myles Sunday; Joshua Sunday; two great grandchildren, Trinity Graham and Kaylynn Sunday.
A Celebration of Gary's life will be 2 p.m. Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS 66203.
