Gene W. Rietfors, 82, Olathe, KS, went to be with the Lord at home, September 3, 2020. Gene was raised in Crete, Nebraska, moved to Longmont, Colorado while in high school, graduated from Colorado State University in Journalism, and later received a Masters degree from Michigan State University in Administration and Higher Education while working for the university in communications.
Gene served as Vice President for Development at Baker University in Baldwin City, KS, Executive Director of Development for The Salvation Army in both Kansas City, MO and Detroit, MI, and as President of the Harry J Lloyd Charitable Trust in Overland Park, KS. Gene was a compassionate and kind leader who connected with people in all walks of life, with a particular desire to help the less fortunate in his communities.
Gene is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Penny Standish Rietfors. He also has three children, Kelly Jones, Leslie Farrell, and Jon Rietfors all from Colorado, one sister, Jane Bechtel of White Salmon, WA, one brother, Bill Rietfors of Greeley, CO, one sister-in-law Susie Standish of Lenexa, KS, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Gene was a member of Legacy Christian Church, 10150 Antioch Rd., Overland Park, KS where his memorial service will be held, September 13, at 4:30PM with visitation 30 minutes prior.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be made to Legacy Christian Church at the address above. In his later years, Gene's primary passion became for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be proclaimed boldly.
