George J. Steinmetz, Jr., 93, went home to be with the Lord on June 13, 2018. George was born on August 21, 1924 to George and Leva Steinmetz at their home on Antioch Road in Merriam, KS. He graduated from Shawnee Mission Rural High School in 1943. George married the love of his life, Winnie J. Shipley on July 29, 1948.
George was a charter member of Merriam/Woodson Ave. Bible Church for over 50 years. During World War II he built B-25 bombers for North American and he worked as an aircraft mechanic for TWA for 40 years. George was a lifetime IAM union member.
Spending time with his family was George's highest priority. He loved traveling the world on TWA with Winnie and the kids. He also enjoyed teaching his boys how to play baseball and going to their little league baseball games. He loved dogs and especially his beagles, Herbie, Herbie II and Heidi.
And there was nothing more special to him than spending time with his six grandchildren.
George lived in Merriam, KS his entire life and lived the last 69 years in the home that his uncles, Winnie and he built in 1949.
George was a wonderful and loving husband, father, brother, father-in-law, uncle and grandfather.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie Steinmetz, his sister, Gladys Garrett, and his grandson, Ryan Crow.
George is survived by his children, Nancy (Jerry) Lovins, David, Larry, and John (Jennie), and grandchildren, Lauren (Sean) VanLiew, Kayte, Samantha, John Jr. and George III.
Visitation 10:00 am Saturday, June 16th, Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee. Funeral service immediately following at 11:30 am at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Kansas City Rescue Mission.
