George A. Williams, Jr.

September 11, 1943 — July 3, 2013

George A. Williams, Jr., 69, passed away July 3, 2013, at Kansas City Hospice House.

George was born September 11, 1943, in Washington, D.C., to George A. Williams, Sr., and Dorothea Yvonne Williams Broyles. He graduated from Suitland High School, Suitland, Maryland. He held first chair in the school orchestra, playing the trumpet. He was a member of the Boys Club of D.C., winning awards at all endeavors. Football was his favorite sport. In the early years of the Space program, he worked for the Aries Corporation, a contractor for NASA. He traveled around the world setting up computer tracking programs for the first unmanned satellites. He later began a 30 year career with the US Dept of Agriculture. He transferred form Washington D.C. to the Kansas City office in 1977. He became Deputy Director of Telecommunications, retiring in May 2002.

His hobbies and passions were his family, football, bicycling running, riding his Harley, and working in the yard, especially with azaleas. His main passion was clocks of all kinds. He loved them so much he became a self taught woodworker. He made a personalized clock for each of his children.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia; four children, Cheryl, Laura, Jennifer (Shannon) and Michael; three stepchildren, Steven, Michael and Bradley (Sara); eight grandchildren, Kellen, Courtney, Morgan, Madeline, Brody, Sydney, Nora and Izabelle; two great-grandchildren, Lilly and Jaxon; and two sisters, Judith and Deborah, mother Yvonne. He was preceded in death by his father George A. Williams, Sr.

Visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas 66212 with a memorial service immediately following. There will be a reception following the service at the church.

Memorial contributions in George's name may be made to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64145 or the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF).
