Gerald Dayton Raines died September 6 at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City, MO.
Gerald was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Frances Greer Raines on March 12, 2013. He is survived by a daughter Vicki Raines (Sandy Baker) of Lawrence, KS; a son Doug Raines (Joanne) of Shawnee, KS; a son Randy of Phoenix, AZ; and grandchildren Madelyn, John Henry, and Dayton Raines of Shawnee, KS.
Gerald was born in Hooker, OK on May 21, 1925 to Dayton and Caroline (Tatro) Raines. He graduated from Hutchinson High School May 27, 1943. He then entered the U.S. Army on July 29, 1943, where he served until he was discharged February 9, 1946 after achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a decorated paratrooper in the 513th Parachute Infantry.
After his return from World War II he enrolled at Hutchinson Junior College, where he met Frances Greer. They were married April 9, 1948. Gerald graduated from Hutchinson Junior College on May 27, 1948. He then enrolled at Kansas State Teacher's College in Pittsburg, KS and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree on June 1, 1950. He later completed his Master of Science degree at Kansas State Teacher's College on July 13, 1954.
Gerald spent many years teaching and coaching in Kansas public schools in Sylvia, Burton, Plains, Ulysses, and Winfield. He then went on to become the Director of Development at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, and then later returned to teaching and coaching at Southwestern College. Gerald and Frances retired in Winfield and then later moved to Lenexa, KS.
A memorial service will be held Monday, September 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Amos Funeral Home in Shawnee, KS.
